Feelings In
Funded Feb 9, 2022After the day I had, learning that my project was funded made my day. Thank you soo much for your generous donation. I want you to know that your donation will be used to support my teachings of social emotional learning. The students I serve will be able to learn ways of coping while in and out of school. I can imagine using the feelings rug to help students identify what they are feeling by using the emoji. Envisioning this during my future sessions brings a warmth to my heart.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jasmin
This classroom project was brought to life by Black History Month Partners and one other donor. One Fish Two Fish- All Else Fails, Hug a Dog
Funded Oct 3, 2019When I first received this gift I was excited to see how my students would react when they see specifically the puppy(Coco). What I did not expect was for the teachers to become excited as well.
When I took Coco out of the box, and placed it on my desk. I first introduced the dog to the staff to inform them of Coco's arrival. Some of the teachers came down to see Coco and was welcomed with the fish tank as well. Some of my teachers inquired if they can pet him when they are stressed and needed some comfort. When the 9th and 10th graders came to by room and saw Coco, they immediately thought that it was a real dog. Some students where afraid of the dog, while others wanted to touch and hold it.
One day a student was sitting in my office waiting to go home after an incident that he had at the school. While sitting in my office he sat down with Coco and began to pet the dog. Once the student felt the dog's heart beat, you can see him become more comfortable and that is when he started to talk about his past and all of the hard things he went through at such a young age.
With Coco, I plan on using it during all of my group lessons that I have as a focal piece during the circles. Coco will be there as a member of our circle so that when he is needed for comfort he is available.
Although I do not have a beta fish to place in the fish tank, once it gets warmer I will place a fish in the tank and it will be used as a zen/peace area, so the students can look at the fish and feel so sense of tranquility during hard times such as academic, social or family stress.
When I first thought of getting a comfort toy dog I thought that it would be silly to introduce a toy to a bunch of teenagers. However, I notice that the students look forward to seeing it and saying hello. This was the best gift my students and I can ask for.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jasmin
