I started a basketball club last year, at the school that I currently teach in, because of the limited affordable extracurricular activities, clubs, leagues, and athletic exposure in the school area. We are a title one school so my desire is to provide my students with equal opportunities, regardless of household income. I hope to empower and instill lifelong disciplines such as leadership, teamwork, and good sportsmanship, as well as a love for sports. We managed with minimal equipment last year, but I would love to get this kicked off without the stressors that come with not having necessary equipment. When practicing, I would love to be able to provide most students with a basketball for dribbling and shooting drills. I also hope to make sure they stay hydrated and even add a little snack in for the hungry ones. At the end of the Basketball season we will be having a "Basketball Banquet." At the Basketball Banquet the students will be receiving recognition for virtues observed throughout our practices and games. Awards will be given for demonstrating honesty, leadership, respect, effort, teamwork, etc. I want our students to feel recognized, empowered, and not overlooked for demonstrating virtues that are not heavily praised and emphasized within their communities.
