The resources included in this project will be enough equipment and chemical supplies for EACH of my students to make a small bar of soap to take home. If funded, this Project-Based Learning (PBL) will build my students' confidence in science after distance learning left them with little to no high-school laboratory skills! These STEAM scholars will explore the structure and properties of matter (PS1.A) as they develop their bars through the chemical reaction (PS1.B) of saponification. They will progress crosscutting concepts such as observing patterns and constructing explanations of stability and change. The students will also be advance their science practices through using models to describe the process of saponification. This process is fun and exciting, that will give my chemistry students very technical yet achievable results - their own bar of soap! The entire project will include modeling, active experimentation, writing, and a little creation to activate and motivate ALL types of learners. It is my hope that a project such as this will give them the necessary confidence boost to persevere throughout the school year and move forward from distance learning and its shortcomings.
