Continuing to find ways to integrate many of my students' cultural backgrounds into our reading is a challenge, yet it is worth every bit of time and effort. Using literature, students are able to apply multiple reading, writing, collaborative skills, critical thinking, and art forms in order to convey their understanding of the topic and display mastery of content and standards in multiple formats. A book study engages my students on another level, having them look forward to either hearing me read and place feeling into the text or grouping up with each other and taking turns reading and questioning the text. Our book choices are limited at the moment, as I am a first year teacher and am continuing to build my classroom library from scratch. Students are eager to start new book studies and look for ways to express themselves in these moments. By having a copy for each student, I am able to model, guide, assign, and work with students in breaking down a rich, cultural, historical fiction text that requires students to engage and apply themselves continuously throughout the read.
This project, I believe, has the chance to open windows for students to see just HOW history has helped mold us into who we are and how we can continue to propel forward with our past in mind, our hopes and dreams in sight. We are moving along in our literature unit in the classroom as well as our growth of a nation in Social Studies. With a copy of "Chains" for each student, we can facilitate classroom discussions, partake in book clubs, and integrate our learning over multiple content areas, setting a purpose for learning and expanding of our skills.
