The standalone virtual reality headsets will elevate and engage students in understanding the places they will learn about. They will be used as an enrichment activity to enhance student understanding of ancient civilizations.
With virtual reality, students will experience a place or a moment in history directly. As part of the Ancient Civilization Unit, students become experts of one of the civilizations- Ancient Egypt, India, China, Greece, or Rome- and present their information in the form of 4 stations, which are prepared and run by them. Two stations focus on seven aspects of civilizations including food, social structure, government, religion, arts, technology and writing. Students analyze artifacts to see what they reveal about the civilization, then read information written by the experts to find the details that correlates with the artifacts. In the third station they present a mythology from the civilization, exploring how the story reveals various aspects of the culture. In the fourth station, students explore the religions or philosophies of these places.
When students get done with a station, they do an extension activity- using selected books, websites, or games that enhances their knowledge of the civilization. We need one more enrichment activity, and virtual reality is that missing component. They will use the VR headsets to take virtual tours to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Acropolis in Athens, or experience spectacles in history like chariot races, for example.
Imagine the excitement when these young students get to experience a place they are studying. They can explore it and answer some of their questions. It will make a lasting impression that not only connects them more deeply to the content, but to the world.
