Chopsticks, by Jessica Anthony, is a multi-media novel, blending photographs, postcards, newspaper articles, text message threads, and more to tell its story. The main character is a teenage piano prodigy, Gloria, who goes missing after her mother dies. The novel examines the circumstances leading up to her disappearance, which center around her romance with her next-door neighbor, Frank. But Glory’s romance drifts in and out of reality, and the reader must decide what is true and what is in her imagination. This foray into the surreal, told through highly-accessible visuals, offers students the opportunity for critical thought at a reading level they can understand. I’m especially excited to read Chopsticks with my 9th grade class because the characters in the story are their age, and also because Frank, the object of Gloria’s affection, is a Spanish-speaking ELL student, just like them! Chopsticks is accessible, fun, and culturally relevant. I am confident that the text will not only help them to develop their English literacy skills, but also to make sense of many of the challenges of their adolescence. And I know my students will absolutely love this beautiful, colorful, and engaging story!
