My computer science principles students will implement automation for agricultural facilities. The project will entail students making a small test greenhouse and equip it with a variety of sensors (e.g. temperature, humidity, PH, CO2) and activate events (e.g. spray water, open/close a hatch, turn the heat on/off) based on sensor readings and optimal crop growth conditions. This project can be expanded in many ways. For example, insolation can be measured at different locations at different times of the year to determine optimal conditions to grow crops. Students participating in this course and extracurricular club activities will experience 21st century skills to apply to a wide variety of STEM based occupations. This project also opens opportunities for cross disciplinary learning as students can conduct data analysis, make visualizations, learn basic meteorology and agriculture. Arduino Kits will provide students with the tools to support the many projects listed above. Students will also be working individually and within a team, learning to work together and solve real world problems.
