Most of my students have not had music before, so this will be their first introduction to learning about music. That being said, I'm excited to have them explore instruments, different types of music, and movement.
My students will learn about music through performing, creating, and responding to music using singing, instruments, and movement. We will learn to read and write music, and to use our ears to be able to further understand how music works. Hopefully, my students will learn more about self-expression and communication through the arts. My students will use the whiteboards to practice writing music words or compositions and will use the boomwhackers and other instruments to accompany our singing activities. Carpet dots will allow us to find a circle on the rug, as well as keep consistency for our classes to know where they sit. Scarves will be used for movement activities, as well as activities where we might normally hold hands--we can more safely be connected with scarves. The sound bowl will be for ending activities and refocusing class attention to the teacher. Picture books will be for reading activities about music, and many include information about instruments or different music cultures and communities. Finger puppets will be used for play-based learning and vocal exploration, especially for younger grades. The headphone jack adapter is to connect to the stereo that is already in the classroom for listening activities--we don't have access to any CD's here, so we will connect devices to the stereo to project sound for listening.
I hope they leave my classroom excited to learn more about music and to share music-making with their friends, families, and communities.
