Esperanza Rising is a remarkable book. My students are engaged, challenged and absolutely love this book. We spend three weeks diving into the history of Mexico, the culture and understanding cultural differences. Empathy is so important to cultural understanding. This book connects with some of my students culturally yet also introduces the rest of the class to Mexican culture. Creating a connection between the students helps them understand the world and how diversity makes the world more captivating. Each chapter is named after a fruit or specific ethnic food. At the end of the unit we make several dishes that incorporate the different chapters and bring to life this part of the book.
