Thank you sincerely from the students of PS3 for providing much needed books to our school library! Students have been so excited to see the new titles on the shelves. You have given us with some old favorites, as well as what is new and exciting.

Limited budgets make book buying an ongoing challenge, and with your support I am able to keep the library vibrant and up-to-date. This is crucial to keep students coming back.

As a librarian, it makes me so happy to be able to provide students and teacher with the books they request, as well as recommend new titles. Having donors like you makes this possible. Your commitment to PS3 and student literacy is truly appreciated!”

  • Graphic Novel Mania!

    Funded May 12, 2021

Thank you so much for your generosity! My students have loved being able to access all the newest and best graphic novels in the school library. For a diverse student body, it is of vital importance that students can see themselves reflected in the books they are reading and our library purchases reflect this.

The library is a vital part of the school community and by having the books students are excited to read, it fosters a love of libraries and reading. There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing a students face light up when I show them the books they have been asking for.

Your support is so appreciated by students and teachers alike!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harrison

  • Keep Students Reading!

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Your continued generosity is astounding! The gift of having new books arrive in the library is incredible. Students get so excited when they see me carrying the boxes through the halls and can't wait to see what is inside. Seeing them eager to look at new books is such a reward.

In addition to being able to continuously update the beloved graphic novel section, I have also been using new titles for classroom projects. For example, in first grade we are working on writing book reviews of our favorite library books. In fifth grade, I am working with classroom teachers to begin a unit on "Changemakers." Being able to give students excellent choices of books to is an invaluable resource.

Your support throughout this school year is deeply appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harrison

  • Replenish the School Library!

    Funded Oct 17, 2020

Thank you from the readers of PS 261! All the brand new library books you provided have made my students and I so happy and eager to get reading. I love bringing in bins filled with the best brand new books for them to choose from. In this difficult year, it is more important than ever to get kids excited about reading and having books they are interested in makes a huge difference.

There are students at 261 who do not have access to books at home, so being able to provide them with reading material is a crucial part of my job. We have some good resources for e-books, but there is something about holding a brand new book in your hands and being able to take it home that is special.

    Your generosity is so appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harrison

  • Help Bring an Arabic Interest Section to Our School Library!

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

I would like to extend my deepest thanks for funding our Arabic interest section in the school library. Students have been so excited to visit our brand new shelf to check out books for themselves and also to bring home to read with their parents. One kindergartener excitedly told me, "Ms. Lauren, I can bring this home for my mom to read to me! It is in Arabic!" It is also wonderful to see my Yemeni students proudly showing their classmates books about their country.

This project is so important to our school community. In the words of our Arabic Arts teacher, "It will be a heaven sent for all the Yemeni and other Arab students who have recently immigrated here as well as the Brooklyn Born kids of Arab descent who will feel validated to see their home language in the school library!"

Our school is a proudly diverse community and I want all students to be able to see themselves represented and reflected in our library books. Thank you for your support of the PS 261 Library and reading community!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harrison

  • Help! Our Library Needs a Couch!

    Funded Oct 16, 2019

A heartfelt THANK YOU to all for contributing to the new couch in our school library. It is used all day as a place for students (and teachers!) to relax, read, and enjoy being in the library. It has served to make the space welcoming and cozy. A perfect place to curl up and read a book!

Students were literally jumping for joy the day the couch arrived. It has become such a staple and focal point of the library. During class time, students take turns sitting on the couch to read - it is so popular in the younger grades, that we have to rotate in 10 minute intervals! During open library hours before and after school, kids can sit and do homework, read and relax, or chat with a friend.

I am excited to continue teaching, learning, and reading with my students in 2020. You have contributed to making our library a welcoming place to learn, explore new books, relax, or just sit quietly. Your support of our school community is truly greatly appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harrison

  • Graphic Novel Mania!

    Funded Dec 2, 2018

I can't thank you enough for donating to my project, "Graphic Novel Mania." The students were SO excited when they saw the newly stocked graphic library section in the library. I try to keep the newest and most exciting titles on the shelves because my students are always asking for recent additions as well as old favorites (meaning Dogman!). The donations also gave me room to research and purchase titles that the students may not be asking for, but I know they will love.

I find that graphic novels are particularly important for reluctant readers. If I can hook a kid on reading, through a series like Amulet or Dogman, I find they often branch out into other types of books too. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a student (who may not necessarily be a "reader") jumping up and down with excitement when they find the book they are looking for on the shelf.

For many students, their classrooms and the school library are their main exposure to the world of books and it is a responsibility my fellow teachers and I take seriously. The students at PS 261 join me in thanking you for keeping our library a place they love to visit where I am able to keep the shelves filled with the books they want to make reading not only educational but fun as well!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harrison

Graphic novels are by far the most popular genre in the library. I literally cannot keep them on the shelves! Currently our graphic novel section is very empty and I am excited for it to be filled with enticing choices. I would love to build the collection with some titles that are popular such as the Dogman series and Garfield, as well as new and diverse additions that I think my students will enjoy. The excitement I see on their faces when they find a great book is priceless and I want to be able to provide that joy every time a student visits the library.
