Funded May 6, 2020In first grade we teach our students different types of genres such as Informational text, Persuasive Text, Fiction, Biography, Historical Fiction, Traditional Story, Poetry, Drama, and Realistic Fiction. We introduce these Genres with fun and interactive books. One of the characters that I use for enrichment is Pete the Cat by James Dean. Mr. James Dean writes his stories with rich and funny content. His theme is "It's All Groovy" no matter the situation. You can endure the situation that one is experiencing. I normal read his stories and place them in my classroom library plus Mr. Dean's books are A.R. (Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children's independent reading practice). The students take a test and earn A.R. points. The more points a student earns, the better chance they are rewards for their accomplishments.
In my classroom we normally read throughout the day using different genres. We read together, independently or in small group instructions. They also get a chance to read with their friends privately during our Reading block. Reading and social interaction is very important at this stage of a students development especially for my English Language Learners.
I had the privilege of delivering the books, pencils and crayons to my student's home since the district was implementing Distance Learning. I was able to say Hello and Goodbye to my students. I told them that wonderful people such as yourself donated the itmes to them. Thank you and God bless you.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Barrera
