Vocabulary is fundamental for students when learning how to read. Vocabulary strengthens students reading comprehension and fluency. When students have a strong vocabulary, it strengthens their success in all academic areas. Music has been shown to help with student engagement, memorization, and understanding of information. A dear colleague and friend once told me, if you want kids to learn something, teach them through song. She was right! Music is a great resource to assist in learning, with all kids, but will especially benefit my ELL and SPED students.
Flocabulary is a resource that gives students strong academic vocabulary in all content areas, through music videos. Repetition of words, and engaging activities and worksheets for the entire week are given, ending with a vocabulary test to show their understanding. In addition, if a student needs more time working with a word or a list, he/she can continue to practice and re-assess when he/she feels he's mastered the understanding of the word's meaning. This is an online program, and since we are not in the school face to face, this is a great way for my students to have the reinforcement of a strong vocabulary program to learn from.
