Social distancing is term even 4th graders are familiar with. I am planning seating arrangements, lessons, and strategies to promote the safety of my students and their families. Our school district will be implementing guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19. Face coverings and desk shields for my young students, can help stop the spread of germs associated with a variety of common illnesses including COVID-19. Because seating for daily instruction, partner and group work will look different in my classroom this school year, students may have to use use desk shields and wear face coverings if working in close proximity. Having clean face coverings available and portable desk shields will allow my students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them during already stressful circumstances. Making sure students are comfortable and safe in the learning environment is a priority to me and an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they know they are cared for. The products that I have selected will help my students by promoting a safer classroom environment so that focus and attention will be on learning, not fear of the unknown. Reusable face coverings can be used and washed daily (by the teacher), and disposable masks can be substituted for students who may prefer that option. Individual, assigned desk shields will provide an additional layer of protection for students in close proximity. A safe and secure environment can positively affect my students' attitude and work effort. In an uncertain world of pandemic, varying news reports, and procedures that seem to change daily, I feel that these simple classroom additions will provide a bit of stability as we establish our own classroom procedures to move forward with this unusual school year!
