E. V. C. STEM Charter School strives to provide students the opportunity to design and implement working, autonomous robots. Building these projects requires students to learn principles of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and develop software to make the robots work. The robots perform functions like moving about, sensing objects, avoiding objects, battling other robots, following objects or people, and performing intricate maneuvers to accomplish tasks. In 2018, students were able to compete in the RoboGames nearby Silicon Valley event which allowed students to compete in autonomous robot competitions against students from around the world. The E.V. C. Charter School program uses paid teachers, and volunteer engineering teachers and parents in an after-school program, to teach kids through hands-on design and construction of functional, working robots. The school tries to provide a robot kit for every 2 students, who work in pairs so that all students have an opportunity to build and design the robots. The demand for spots in the classes and after-school club has meant that we don't have enough robotic kits to meet the demand. We would like to buy 2 more robotics kits to provide 4 more students the opportunity to participate.
