My students love to read, and I want to ensure that they have the resources necessary to grow as learners. Since many of them don’t have access to books at home, the classroom library is crucial in encouraging students to be avid readers. These texts would enhance our library giving students far more nonfiction books to choose from. Having access to nonfiction literature encourages curiosity, helps students learn a variety of information, and builds their background knowledge, giving them a better foundation as readers. Reading nonfiction books also exposes them to specialized vocabulary and, the more words a child knows, the better reader and writer he or she will be. The texts I’m requesting focus on science and social studies concepts and will enable me to integrate science and social studies with reading, allowing students to have a stronger understanding of all three. Science and social studies often get pushed to the side in order to fit in reading, writing, and math. By not making these subjects a priority, we do students a disservice. My students are eager to learn more about the topics taught in science and social studies. Having nonfiction books about these topics will take their learning beyond the text book. My students are inquisitive learners and voracious readers who are full of questions about the world around them. Please help me to encourage their love of knowledge and foster their growth as readers by providing them with a variety of nonfiction texts.
