Keeping students interested and engaged in reading is something every teacher hopes to be able to do. It has been a challenge for me to consistently keep students engaged. They love short stories and stories they can relate to on a personal level. The text Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian has been proven to be engaging for students. I will be using it to introduce the six signposts of reading and to help them improve their writing by responding to short answer questions using text evidence. Additionally, we will hold Socratic Seminars to foster student discussion, expanding their academic language skills and allowing for further student engagement.
