Self-regulation and sensory processing are two of the greatest hurdles students with intellectual disabilities face on a daily basis. My project would help fund equipment for a sensory room to give students access to a space where they are able to regulate emotions, explore the senses in a gentle way, and provide a safe space to take breaks when they are over stimulated from the world around them. Students who are provided with appropriate sensory outlets and calming areas to reset are more ready and effective learners in the classroom. The sensory swing and inflatable pod will provide pressure for students who may be a heightened state of anxiety. The blackout sensory tent would also allow a safe space for students to calm and self-regulate their behavior. My hope is that the availability of safe, high-quality sensory equipment my students will be able to work on and develop self-regulation and self-calming strategies to help support their growth to becoming independent and successful members in our community.
