The requested Junior Scholastic subscriptions will provide magazines to each student who is in the reading intervention Power Hour (those students who have been identified as needing small group or whole group reading intervention for at least thirty-five mins a day). This is not just a subscription for these students. It is a porthole to the world around them that they may not have access to. In addition to giving students access to current events, this project will give students access to nonfiction texts. 85% of the books my students have access to are fiction. This creates a deficit in their ability to read and write nonfiction texts. This deficit was seen in our last round of state testing where students scored significantly lower in nonfiction tasks than on fiction.
