  • Reading Success in a 3rd Grade Classroom

    Funded Dec 14, 2022

My students are loving the resources you donated to our classroom! During tests, they can better concentrate due to the new privacy boards. They are better organized with the addition of book baskets to place their daily supplies in. We have also gotten great use from the reading comprehension kits, and have been able to grow our skills with these new resources.

The timers have made the biggest impact on students. I have several students that have trouble focusing to get work completed. Using a timer in order to set a goal for finishing assignments has motivated them and created a structure for success. For this, I am truly thankful!

    I sincerely appreciate your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McAtee

  • Growing Great Readers in 3rd

    Funded Jul 21, 2021

The books you donated to our classroom are fabulous and are being used for shared reading instruction. The books are read aloud to the class multiple times during a week to improve comprehension. Each week there is a reading skill in addition to comprehension such as summarizing, identifying the problem/solution, identifying the lesson of the story, and learning about the author's craft. These are just the beginning of reading skills addressed with these books.

In addition to reading skills, these books also give a jumping-off point for learning grammar skills from parts of speech to writing a narrative story. We have already covered many skills since the beginning of the school year!

The great thing about the Rooted in Reading program is that the literature picks are excellent quality and are usually new to most students. The books aren't ones students have read a hundred times, which is nice!

My students and I can't thank you enough for your tremendous generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McAtee

  • Clean Air Classroom

    Funded Jul 25, 2020

The air purifiers have really made a difference in our classroom. They are quiet and seem to be doing a nice job of cleaning the air. Using these machines, in addition to hand hygiene seems to be working for us thus far. Parents are pleased and other teachers and custodial staff have noticed a difference in our room. Thanks to your generosity, we have been a healthy class of second graders! Learning in new ways due to COVID-19 guidelines has been tough, but I am confident our classroom environment is safer because of your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McAtee

  • Read to Succeed: Building Critical Thinkers

    Funded Nov 26, 2018

The books you have donated to my classroom and students will have a lasting impact on students this year as well as many years to come! These are quality works of children's literature that will be used for shared reading, grammar, comprehension, and character development lessons. My students have been introduced to many of the titles already and have enjoyed reading and hearing the wonderful stories! They are excited to experience all the books this year! Your generosity is truly appreciated, and we are so very grateful!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McAtee

The books used in the "Rooted in Reading" curriculum focus on phonics, story elements, grammar, and comprehension skills. I pull many skills from each book, and focus on these skills for an entire week. The skills go hand in hand with our South Carolina state standards and also our college and career readiness standards. This curriculum and these books are great tools for teachers, and are so valuable for student learning! The book "Hoot and Peep" focuses on the literary device onomatopoeia, as well as making text connections to another text, to self, and to the world. Other skills taught with this book include facts about owls, the -en word family, and fl blend words, not to mention story vocabulary. I already use the "Rooted in Reading" curriculum, and have been borrowing the books or finding read-alouds on-line, but would love to have access to them in my own classroom so the students can use them regularly.
