To help encourage their love for reading and writing I use picture books to serve as mentor texts to teach specific reading comprehension skills and writing strategies. These mentor texts help the students build the essential foundation for reading comprehension and writing skills in a way that is relatable to them. By using a picture book as a mentor text it becomes something they all enjoy listening too and is something we refer back to often. These books would provide additional opportunities for my class to build their essential foundation of reading and writing skills they'll need throughout their lifetimes.
