  • Stand Up for Learning

    Funded Nov 28, 2022

Thank you so much for funding the purchase of a new standing desk for our classroom. Most recently students could be seen using the desk as they completed a small group assignment reviewing for state testing.

When my students first saw the desk cheers could be heard down the hallway. Teachers could be seen sticking their heads outside their classroom doors wondering what was happening.

From beginning-of-year "All About Me" presentations to end-of-year "Dear Future Fifth Grader" letters we will continue using this desk for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. TURNAGE

Thank you again for helping us get the standing desk for our classroom. This is an "open" desk in the back of the classroom which students are allowed to use at will. If a students gets tired of sitting, or just wants to stand while working, they simply ask to go to the stand-up desk and are allowed to do so. Every since it was assembled, it has been the "go-to" place. We were recently studying Author's Purpose in English Language Arts and throughout the course of the 90 minute lesson three different students used the desk. While originally intended for my students with attending issues, it has become popular with all students. This desk has truly been a blessing.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. TURNAGE

Digital technology, reduced physical activity and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle have all contributed towards diminishing the cognitive abilities of today's student learners. According to JustStand.org one way to combat this is with standing desks in the classroom. According to the article Stand-based versus Seated Classrooms and Childhood Obesity in the American Journal of Public Health a standing desk lowers the risk of obesity and weight gain -- a new phenomena in American children. Movement is a key to combat this. Furthermore the standing desk in my classroom will offer an option particular students to improve classroom engagement and naturally fight the symptoms of ADHD.
