I teach in an urban school district where families struggle to provide basic necessities for students. This problem becomes more difficult when families are also supporting children with autism or other cognitive disabilities. Supplies like noise cancelling headphones are considered a basic support for students with difficulties processing senses but in our district, it is challenging for our students to have access to materials that will assist in their ability to engage with their classmates. In school, we provide students with changes of clothing (sweatpants, shirts, and socks), launder soiled clothing (laundry detergent), and support their ability to manage their hygiene as independently as they are able (toothbrushes and holders, wipes, toiletry bags, mirror, trash bags). We teach students to dress themselves, toilet, brush their teeth, etc. We use donations for clothing and teachers' personal funds to provide self care supplies. These supplies will be used to keep students clean, warm and healthy both in school and in their homes!
