English classrooms often focus on reading and comprehending texts. In addition to reading comprehension, I want to encourage my students to create literary works of their own. Understanding information when it is presented is one thing but if students can also learn to create their own content, they can understand the power of the author. With all things, learning to create literature requires practice and a process. The writing process often includes steps such as brainstorming new ideas, packaging the ideas into a format then presenting those ideas to an audience. With this project, my students will be able to engage in all of the steps in the writing process. The materials in this project will be used to designate an area in my classroom for students to work on their writing. This area will be referred to as the “Writing Center.” The "Writing Center" will give my students access to the opportunity of expression. In this space, the storage bench and ottomans will double as flexible seating and an accessible place to keep writing materials (such as paper, pens, pencils etc.). Students will be able to facilitate their own brainstorming of ideas as individuals, in small groups or as a class with the stand-alone chalkboard and chalk markers. Once the work is done, student will be able to bring their writing to life by printing it out or making copies and distributing them to their peers using the printer. Finally, I will use the lights to create a place for students to present their hard work because all children deserve to see their name in lights.
