High school is a time when some students struggle with identity, expression, and confidence. Hence, risking disengagement from the classroom and school community. Through building a strong rapport with my students, I can provide emotional support and necessities to be successful and engaged. I am fortunate to work with dedicated students who want to make their school a better place, as well as empower and express themselves. I work with high risk, special education students who need guidance and scaffolding to help build their inner voice. The Cricut and accessories will be used to create bulletin boards, posters, t-shirts, etc! Their creations can also be used to improve comprehension of new concepts and to demonstrate learning in multiple ways, developing their own independent thinking. Then, they will be able to expand their skills to become entrepreneurs and learn how to create and run a business. My students will begin by experimenting with the Cricut and when they reach a certain comfort level, they can think about a personal creation. The environment for design will be safe, welcoming, and encouraging. I will guide them by using creative lessons and tools to teach them about empowerment, courage, inner voice, and business skills. From there, they will use those skills to create orders and start selling their products to students and staff within our school. Then, we will stretch their business to other schools within the district. To take this a step farther, I will encourage them to choose a nonprofit organization/cause and create a fundraiser using their products to raise money and give back to the community. This will allow the students to interact at a micro and macro level. This will encourage confidence, build entrepreneurial skills, and prepare them for 21st-century career and college readiness skills.
