My Reading Life
Funded Nov 14, 2018First and foremost, thank you so much for your donations. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to stock up our classroom library and are now on our way to filling up our bookshelf. Every day, we begin class with 15-20 minutes of independent reading time (this is a school-wide initiative). Having a large selection of different books allows our students to find a book they actually enjoy reading. If we force students to read every day, they usually end up resenting reading even more because they're being forced to do something they don't enjoy. Having various genres and levels of books provides access to all of our students - access to literature and fun and adventure.
The Goosebumps books and the Percy Jackson are the most popular books from this project. Goosebumps is a lower leveled series that takes students into fun and spooky mysteries that engage them - we often have trouble getting certain students to put their books away once independent reading time is complete. The same goes for the Percy Jackson books, or anything written by Rick Riordan really.
Our children seek adventure and thrill and an escape from the monotony of the same every day middle school routine, and these books do that for them. Their reading homework has also improved significantly, because they actually look forward to reading at home and writing or drawing or speaking about it. We've had a handful of students actually approach us and tell us how they used to hate reading, but now with all the new books we have, they are excited to come to class and read.
Thank you all so much, again, for providing our students with these amazing gifts - your kindness and generosity will always be appreciated and remembered in class 205 and beyond.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Zompa
