In OCSS English next term, I will have two classes of about 20 students. In the OCSS program we have smaller classes to better facilitate the additional support OCSS students need. For high school students, especially OCSS students, English is a difficult content area to complete. The requirements of reading, writing, and speaking are difficult on their own, but become even more challenging as class sizes grow. When you factor in the specific challenges OCSS students face, trauma, a lack of academic skills from previous years, and other situational challenges, completing English often becomes overwhelming for OCSS students. The aim of this class at the most basic level is to give OCSS students the best opportunity to earn an English credit towards graduation, while still preparing them for a world that increasingly utilizes reading, writing, and speaking skills in the work place. In order to reach those goals I am aiming to use novels that are more accessible, and more engaging to students. Ender's Game is a novel that is accessible, engaging, and still allows for cross comparison through the lens of "The Hero's Journey" as made famous by Joseph Campbell. A class set would allow students access to the text in the room, and at home on a one to one basis.
