Teenage years are already tough and with increasing social demands they can become even more confusing and overwhelming for a child with autism. I am honored to be working with our campus autism population this year. Some of the items I am asking for are to assist me with instruction in their social skills class. We are focusing on social emotional learning and how to properly identify and deal with the feelings we have when things become too much to handle. Some of the sensory toys will be used to help with focus and concentration throughout their day as they transition from classroom to classroom. Other items are to help me create a 'quiet area' for when we need some time to sort through moments of sensory overload. I will also be using some of the items for their reward system, because sometimes it's nice to be acknowledged for the hard work we do. The skills I am teaching my students are not only for the classroom, but for everyday life and into adulthood. I want them to know that it is okay to ask for help or to take a break. Most importantly, I want them to know that it is not wrong to have any feelings they have at any moment they have them, they just need to learn how to manage those moments appropriately.
