The 9th grade English curriculum changed in our district this year to give students more choice in what they read and how they show their learning. When my students were given the choice in what time period they wanted to explore and what novel they wanted to read, they all chose Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief" because they were interested in learning the social values and events that influenced these characters in a World War II setting. While this text was originally on the list of options for my students, I was just told that those books were never ordered due to lack of funds. My students would benefit from the social values explored in this historical fiction novel and would explore the idea this novel demonstrates that people in history and in our lives today are more complicated than they may seem. I strive to give my students the opportunity to explore the lessons this novel teaches and use the historical context of this novel to create a cross-curriculum unit plan that allows students to learn not only about literary analysis, but about the complexities of history and people as well.
