Our school's goal is to increase active participation in our classrooms to a minimum of 85% at all times. This is particularly challenging and important in an autism support classroom as many of my students barriers to learning include difficulty attending to what we are learning as well as less ability to interact verbally. These materials are an important part of our classroom as they provide opportunities to learn with 100% active engagement using concrete materials while learning important basic concepts in literacy and mathematics. Early Learner Folder Games, the Pop and Match games and Pop and Add games will give my students an opportunity to interact with concepts independently and in small groups that they may not be able to focus on in a whole group or lecture format. The Snap Together Letter Blocks, Alphabet Stamps, and Magnetic Numbers provide students who lack the verbal skills to interact in a traditional teaching environment opportunities to explore and share skills in ways that do not require verbal response. Without these alternative methods these students have difficulty showing what they know and accessing new challenges for skill growth.
