I have used UNICEF Kid Power bands as a teaching resource for two years to get my students moving and as a vehicle for learning about global philanthropy. Scientific evidence shows that getting active in the classroom improves both academic and social-emotional outcomes for kids. I am currently taking a graduate course around the benefits and strategies for incorporating physical activity in the classroom. When student increase their physical activity, their ability to learn and cope with the stresses of daily life increase significantly. The UNICEF Kid Power bands help us to track our physical activity and set goals for improvement. Most importantly, the UNICEF Kid Power bands I'm requesting for my class build a sense of agency in students as change makers. All of my students come from low socio-economic households. Growing up poor can lead some children to believe that they are powerless to make the world a better place. Kid Power bands allow us to turn our physical activity into ready-to-use therapeutic food packets (RUTFs). For every mile we walk, our bands give us one point. For every ten points we earn, we unlock an RUTF for UNICEF to send to a severely malnourished child overseas. It takes 150 packets to bring a child back from the brink of starvation and to save a life. In past years, my class has earned over 1000 packets in 3 months alone! With every step they take, my students will know that they are making a difference for kids who need their help and will improve their own fitness in the process. Please help us to become change makers for a better world.
