I have A LOT of books. As a teacher I always have my eyes out at garage sales, book stores, thrift stores.. anywhere I might find a book around my student's level that I think they might devour. These books are often well-loved, mismatched, and just plain odd. And I love them. But sometimes it is nice to have a clean, clear set for a specific purpose. These are class sets of three books- by Arnold Lobel, Neil Gaiman, and Simon James, authors who are fun, scary, and informative- that I know my 2nd graders love. Districts often supply class sets of books, and tragically the books they sometimes supply are often chosen for how much work they accomplish. Some standard matches some test and boxes get checked. Some author used vocabulary words that meet a curriculum and combined them to do school work. Some of these books are written by a committee at an educational company.. But the book itself is lifeless. I would love a few books that my class can focus on together that will have more heart. Real authors and illustrators are not selling an educational product- they are sharing their world. I believe kids can pick up on that (I certainly do) and that using literature by true artists makes a meaningful difference in what children learn to love. With these sets to add to my classroom, I hope to do just that.
