If my students develop the skills to manipulate numbers and improve their fluency, this will create a strong foundation for higher level math concepts! You could consider fluency and number sense as the building blocks to math. Instead of just memorizing their facts, I want my students to be problem solvers and to use their prior knowledge of numbers to come up with solutions. When a child has a strong foundation, we set them up for success in the future. I want my kids to be able to build up their fluency and along with that their confidence in mathematics!
