Calming Corner
Funded Dec 7, 2024The Calming Corner has been a great success so far! We were all ready with a space to set it up when the materials arrived in early January, and the students have been using ever since. We use the Calming Corner as a place where the students can go to calm their body and mind. With a calm body and mind they are now ready to participate successfully in their classroom.
This Calming corner has benefited many students but I would like to tell you about one little kindergarten boy with autism who this has helped tremendously. This boy has sensory processing delays and has much difficulty regulating his emotions. He used to come into his classroom in the morning screaming, throwing himself on the floor, throwing objects and being overall disruptive. This is no way to start the day. We realized, from being rushed to school and waiting in the noisy, over stimulating to him cafeteria and then being expected to calmly walk into his classroom to start his day was way too much for him. His body and mind was not ready to start the school day. Now he starts his day in the calming corner tent. He goes in, uses the weighted blanket and listens to calming music for several minutes. When he is ready he comes out ready to start his day ready to learn!
We are also very greatly for the sand and theraputty. All the students love manipulating the theraputty. This calming activity also is a great activity to get them ready for their writing tasks. The putty strengthens the muscle in their hands for them to use a mature grasp on the pencil and to improve writing endurance.
Thank you again for your generosity. Your help has greatly impacted these students. I was overwhelmed with gratitude when I saw that this project was funded.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Gina
