  • Growing Through Active Learning and Meaningful Engagement

    Funded Jul 14, 2020

My students really enjoyed receiving their items and were excited beyond belief, when I delivered to their homes. The items they received were things they felt would make their time at home during the pandemic more bearable. They asked for STEM activities (butterfly hatching kits, Legos, puzzles, chemistry sets, ant farms, gardening supplies, etc.), things they enjoyed while they were at school. They also received arts and crafts supplies, as many of them enjoyed starting the day with a period of painting, crocheting, making origami or making bracelets.

These students are now in middle school. Some of them check in with me to let me know how their projects are going or how much fun they are having using their gifts, or just about their middle school experiences.

I hope to write a grant for some science projects that can be used to supplement the Next Generation Science Standards, which require a greater understanding of natural phenomenon and building models to represent their learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Johnson

  • Mind Your Own Business!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

My students were over joyed to receive our new cash registers, cash register stands and Sizzix die cutting machine! We are learning that owning your own business is a career option. We started a classroom store that proved to be more successful than we ever dreamed it would be. We use student desks to put a single cash box on, that only had compartments for bills. The coins were tossed in the bottom of the box, having to be separated later, which took a good amount of time. Now we have REAL cash registers with stands! I makes our job so much easier and our store looks like a REAL store!

Additionally, 90% of what was sold at our store was handmade. Boxes were made using origami. When we nearly sold out of merchandise on the first day our store was open, we knew we needed a way to speed up production. The Sizzix die cutting machine enables us to create handmade crafts and boxes in a lot less time.

We truly appreciate having our project funded. We have already started planning for our Fall 2018 store. We will also have a spring store. Proceeds from the store go to help with our school programs and activities.

Thank you for helping us to learn about owning a business and helping us help our school”

  • Yes, In My Backyard!

    Funded Jun 18, 2014

Thank you ever so much for all of your generous donations. We are so excited to be able to start the new school year continuing our work studying nature and the environment. Your donations have provided us with tools and resources such as binoculars, books, garden tools and other resources that will make our learning so much more fun.

Children really enjoy the out of doors. They enjoy going to check on the garden and notice the changes that are happening every day. We love looking out of the window and seeing a deer peeking out of the woods or birds at the bird feeder. Your donations are enabling my students to take learning about nature a higher level.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Johnson

  • From Garden to Table~Sharing the Bounty

    Funded Mar 20, 2012

I cannot thank you enough for your generosity.  The children are very excited about getting started on the next leg of this project.  We will double the size of our present garden and share our produce with our local soup kitchen and homeless shelter.  When we first started our garden, we only had one trowel.  I was the "digger".  Now, thanks to you, children will be able to dig and rake and hoe with the arrival of the child size garden tools.  The kids just can't wait to use them!

The hot plate and the griddle are super additions to our garden and "cook your own food" intiatives.  We are really looking forward to cooking with our fresh vegetables and herbs.  We will have "Summer in the Garden" again.  Hopefully our garden will be bountiful!

Thank you so much!  We couldn't do this great work without you”

  • Summer in the Garden

    Funded Aug 10, 2011

Thank you ever so much for your generous donations that funded my project. The children continue to be extremely excited to participate in this ongoing project. We have put the garden to sleep for the winter. The children used the garden tools to rake up all the dead plants and begin a compost pile. They are now bringing in plant material from home to add to our compost pile.

We are looking forward to setting up the greenhouse. This year we would like to start our own plants from seeds. We can't wait! We are also expanding our garden and this year it will be twice the size that it was last year. We are planning on donating some of our produce to a food pantry and a homeless shelter.

Our herb gardens were recently planted and are beginning to grow nicely. We started a new club called "Foodology" and we will be using our herbs in some of our cooking projects.

I hope to continue my relationship with Donors Choose. Without the funding we received our project would not have been nearly as successful as it is!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Johnson

Our students are mostly Latino and African American and attend the city's school with the highest percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch. We are our city's most urban school. We live in central CT. My students are naturally curious and are at an age when they still want to learn. Many of the students come from single parent households and many of them are English language learners who need lots of hands on experiences. My students are generally very excited about school because independent learning is encouraged so they are experienced in choosing topics of interest to study and then conducting the research to present orally to the rest of the class. The effort they put into their learning is commendable. They are learning to be critical readers and thinkers who respectfully challenge the status quo.
