As attendants of a small, rural, charter school in Northern Michigan, my students have a vast array of wide-open spaces in which to engage in physical activity. Yet each day I hear endless accounts of inactivity in the lives of my students. Not only is their life at home filled with lazy times in front of the computer, gaming systems, or television, they are quite obstinate when it comes to requests to be active during the school day. When encouraged to exercise through long hikes for class or asked to expend bursts of energy during lunch/recess, students spend more 'energy' coming up with excuses as to why they cannot exercise than they do by simply moving their bodies. I feel that students have a negative view of exercise and physical activity because they have not been exposed to such opportunities. The 200 students that attend this K-12 charter school are great kids that just need a push in the 'right' direction--one that gets their body moving regularly.
