Evo-lutionary Coding: Play, Create, Share
Funded Jan 2, 2019Students were thrilled to switch up their learning with our new Ozobot classroom kit. Working with 6th,7th, and 8th graders, their first challenge was to draw their initials so that their Ozobot could follow from start to finish. They quickly learned the amount of planning, logical thinking, and creating hypotheses required to be successful- all the skills scientists and engineers use daily!
Students persevered through many failed prototype paths that they diligently worked to create and started the engineering process all over again. I've never seen students enjoy failure so deeply. They took their mistakes as additional challenges, not to be afraid of but to embrace and see through to the end.
Next, they will build a maze/playground for their newly named Ozobots to travel through, a multiple choice pathway that they can use to answer questions and race to answer, and an endless design that their Ozobots will navigate freely without end.
We've really only just scratched the surface of what these little robots can offer the classroom and are energized to keep challenging the teaching and learning that students engage in everyday here at our middle school.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were willing to donate and foster the creative collaboration happening in our classroom.”

Ball in the House!
Funded Nov 15, 2018Your impact was immediate. The mere appearance of the Qball being taken out had students sitting up straight (or standing) gearing up to engage in the math being covered that day. It didn't matter if they completely understood the topic- they stood or sat up taking the chance on their thinking. They shared their voice more because of the Qball.
For students that weren't ready to use their voice this tool became a conduit for them to communicate non-verbally. They were given the role as moderator- The ball would always have to be tossed back to them between speakers. I've noted that this opportunity for the moderators has initiated the building of social bonds with their classmates that are now extending into the halls and lunchtime. My goal of developing student voice and acknowledging the social and emotional needs of my students were made possible by your generosity. My deepest thanks for your contribution, you've made a big impact on student learning.”
