Every year teachers love to crack open their classroom library for the children coming back to school and in dual language classes with emergent bilingual students it's critical that the classroom library is full of high engagement books in both program languages. Coupled with high-quality strategic reading instruction in both languages, emergent bilingual children greatly benefit from reading high-quality books of their choosing that offer a reflection into their lives or a window into other parts of the world. Dual language classrooms should have just as many Spanish language books as English language books, but more often than not English language books overcrowd our classroom libraries. Additionally, there are often many more fiction than nonfiction books. Nonfiction books are critical for building vocabulary and background knowledge, preparing young readers for the transition to reading to learn. Books are a large investment and many teachers invest a lot of their personal money into their classroom libraries because they know the children deserve quality books. We are asking YOU to support the children in our classroom community with funding to buy classroom library books in Spanish! Our entire Donors Choose list is made up for books in Spanish (or bilingual English/Spanish), both fiction books and nonfiction books.
