Students will feel empowered when they have choices and control over their environment. In the classroom, we as teachers can not always allow for individual choices. With this in mind, I allow them to have as much freedom and choice in my math class as I possibly can. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work, how they sit, and many times who they will work with on an activity. Movement is important to our health AND to our learning. Being able to move around in the classroom is a strategy I use daily with activities, stations and cooperative learning. However, many of my students have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, as well as other special needs, and so need another level of sensory input to redirect themselves and be successful in the classroom. By providing a variety of flexible seating options the students will be better able to focus and process information. Currently I have carpet areas, a beanbag chair, stools, and lap boards, as well as several tables at various heights. I know these additional seating options and tools would be valuable resources to my students as they take on the challenges of 6th grade math.
