Reading Class
Funded Sep 23, 2019The books purchased with your donation, "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinnones, has gone down a storm so far in our reading class. Not only is it relatable for a lot of our students but, it's entertaining, accessible and still relevant to what a lot of the students hear and see in their day to day outside school. While we only started reading this since the Holiday break, we are reluctant to put it down in class and do writing work on it.
In the reading class, the students are engaged, focused, entertained and utilizing the time to the fullest. We share out funny parts, we talk about similar experiences, and some of the kids translate the Spanish language parts for me. Some of the students have parents who started out very young, just like the protagonist in the book. Some know other characters in their neighborhood akin to some characters in the book.
I have a few students who are very engaged and passionate about this book. I am getting a lot of props for choosing this book to read in class. We thank you all so, so much for helping us finally read a book we all like.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Moran
Clash of the Texts
Funded Feb 5, 2019I just wanted to give you all a very small taste and picture of the dramatic impact your amazing donations have had on a truly amazing collection of students from different backgrounds, abilities, grades, interests and ages.
Every Friday we gather in my shared ELA classroom, beanbag chairs are pulled out, lights are turned on, coffee/tea and snacks are made/consumed, many great debates and chats happen, but most importantly, there is a light emanating from the students when they are talking about the books they are reading or have read. We generally take the first 20 minutes to share out on what we have read that week, grab snacks and drinks, and settle in for more reading, talking and general relaxing after a long, tough week.
It's a safe space where the students can be themselves, share their thoughts on their week and enjoy the group with like-minded students. Through your generous contributions, this has been made possible for our students. The excitement and exhilaration on their faces as the donations came in was such a gift in itself. Thank you all, humbly.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Moran
