Our school's literary magazine dates back to the school's founding in 1956. About ten years ago, my students and I resurrected this magazine and now publish it yearly to reflect the new generation of writers and artists. We are a large, urban public school in a struggling district, and we get zero funding to have weekly creative writing meetings and to design, create, and publish our literary magazine. We are in major need of chromebooks that will be used by these amazing student writers and artists to create our magazine, called The Pleiades. Even though we do not have a class or any money, we have fundraised each year to actually create and publish the magazine. We raise money to go to our state's journalism conferences so that we can enter our magazine in the Best Of contest each year and each year we come home with an armful of awards. Our club and magazine is about a lot more than just winning the awards. We are in a school district that basically gets told it is the worst in our surrounding area. Our students see mostly negative depictions of themselves in the news and on TV. Our magazine is a chance for my students' brilliance, creativity and humanity to shine. We operate with one old laptop and an out-of-date InDesign package that was donated about nine years ago. We need new laptops and a new Adobe package to keep producing the magazine that is worthy of our students.
