If you look around my classroom at the colorful signs, posters, folder games, and other student materials, the majority of them were printed on my home printer. If I want to purchase games and activities from teacherspayteachers.com, I need to print them on my home printer otherwise they would be printed in black and white at my school. If my students create a project using technology, and I want to be able to hang them around the room or in the hallway, I have to print them at home, otherwise they would be printed in black and white. In the past 7 years of teaching first grade, I have purchased 3 different color printers, and have spent hundreds of dollars on ink. We are not provided with access to a color printer, and therefore if I want to print anything in color for my students, I have to print it at home. Because of the large quantity of printing I do each year, my printers do not last and I am left having to purchase a new printer about every other year. Almost all of my center activities for Math and Language Arts are teacher created activities that need to be printed, and the students do not find them as engaging when they are printed in black and white. This means that in addition to printing student work at home, I am printing many of my teaching materials as well. I need a high quality color printer that will last more than 2 years. A super tank printer also means that I will have enough ink initially for the first two years, and it is much less costly to refill the ink when it does run out.
