My health students every 12 weeks will design, create, and present health fair booths at a free community event. The students will choose subjects that matter to them in the health field and will research information on the subject, then design and create an activity for people to participate in to help them remember the information they want them to take away from their booth. They will also create tri-folds with important information and design a sign for their booth.
The event also has community members that specialize in the health fields to help support what the students are discussing.
The event happens three times each year and is free to the community and family members of the students.
This event also has 8th-grade executive leaders who communicate with community professional members who attend the event, the design the layout of the event, greet every person that attends, supports their peers in giving feedback for their designs, and the night of the event run each gym that is full of booths.
This is truly a student ran event. It is all their ideas, hard work, and passion that lead the event.
Throughout the twelve weeks, they design and re-design until they have the final product they feel strongest about and as their teacher, I support their efforts and what they want to accomplish.
I also work with them on how to excel in their communication skills during the event by working with them on eye contact, speaking clearly and confidently, memorizing the information and working together to have their booth run smoothly.
The students truly take full control of this event and have shown that by their attending the event, usually there is above 92% attendance rate.
They truly astonish community members with their knowledge.
