This novel and teacher’s guide will help to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that I try to make enjoyable for my students. The only problem is it becomes taxing on my pockets. We read a novel every year, and this year I want the students to read something classic and relatable, but from a book that’s not falling apart. This novel, in particular, was chosen with my students in mind. This book will allow my students to explore and analyze issues they deal with every day: power, intolerance, justice, racism, reputation, and they’ll see how history can repeat itself many years later. Many of the books we read are old, falling apart, and the content isn’t relatable. The students began to feel upset because they don’t understand why they have to read book that are held together by tape and staples. I believe that the student’s will take pride in these new books and will be more eager to dive into the discussion and lessons I plan alongside. I also would like for my students to have their own copy to read from. We often have to share novels when reading, or I make copies of chapters as we read. Having a class set will allow for each student to focus on the novel and not be distracted by having to share a book.
