My science classes revolve around student questions. In each unit we strive to answer a large focus question that guides our learning. The majority of these large questions are answered through labs. This DonorsChoose.org project will provide my students with a classroom set of triple beam balances, which they need in our largest project of the year. In a diverse classroom with students from all backgrounds, I find that students are much more engaged when they are working towards answering their own questions through hands on projects. The main lab these scales will be used for lasts two months. Students are told that an E-waste recycling company wants to set up on our local river and dump their waste product into the water. The students are given a sample of the "sludge" and must work in groups to identify all its components and determine if they are toxic. They then write a report as environmental consultants advocating for or against the company being allowed to dump. This is an extensive project that relies on students working together to problem solve, learn about their local water supply, and hone in their lab skills.
