  • Out of the Desk and on to the Rug

    Funded Feb 11, 2020

Thank you so much for donating to my project. It means so much to me and my students. I know so much more learning can now take place on the rug now. I can’t wait to teach my first lesson with the new computer cart and white board. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jones

  • You Can't Be What You Can't Read

    Funded Jun 26, 2019

Thank you so much for the donation of the books. My students has access to the library this week for the first time and they overwhelmingly chose the donated books. It has been amazing seeing them reading around the room in all of the comfy spots. Also, writing reading responses about characters and situations that many of them are familiar with such as migration and being bi-lingual. Using some of the books as read alouds has become a catalyst for deep conversations on historical topics like school segregation. Thanks to you my students are able to connect with the situations that the characters face in their book as well as connect to their history that is often ignored in the mainstream curriculum.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jones

"You can't be what you can't see," is a famous quote attributed to Marian Wright Edleman. When my students go into my current classroom library, they do not see themselves represented in the pages of biographies or in the characters of the fiction books that occupy my shelves. The books I have chosen for my class show Latin people throughout history who have accomplished extraordinary things as well as ordinary characters that share many of the same daily experiences as my students. It is my hope that when my students choose a book from the library, not only do they want to read it but they can see themselves on the pages.
