When I first became a teacher I was lucky enough to hear Ron Clark speak at a convention. His efforts to spark enthusiasm, creativity, adventure, and confidence in his students has helped shape the teacher I am today. I want to create flexible seating to give my students more opportunity to be active, engaged, collaborative and excited about learning. I want students to come into my classroom and find a place where they can work best from; whether that means sitting on a cushion on the floor, curled up in a saucer chair, or just the freedom of movement at a stool instead of their uncomfortable desks. I want my antsy students to have the opportunity to sit on bouncy balls. I want to eliminate the barriers of desks so that students can collaborate more easily. I have always tried to create an atmosphere of safety and warmth, of collaboration and excitement; but I want more. I want my room to be completely student-centered. I want them to feel the freedom of choice and I want them to use the room for discussion. I want them to stand if they cannot sit still any longer, or to lounge on the floor and relax as they practice math. I want them to be happy, excited, mobile, and engaged.
