Students at my school are working on learning about the history of music around the world and how to create their own music. Whether we are working on music theory, world music, or music history the students can get so much more out of their lessons by getting hands on experiences. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are given the chance to learn to play the ukulele. This user friendly instrument allows students to experience the music hands on and builds up their confidence. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th are also given the chance to be part of London Elementary's Old Time Ensemble. We started the program last year and had around 20 members. It was a wonderful experience for the students that sparked their interest in the musically rich traditions of their NC roots. This year we have 32 students who are staying after school twice a month to play. The students currently are having to share instruments because we do not have enough for everyone. Students are also having to read their music off of the floor as we do not have music stands. With music stands and more ukuleles the students will be able to rehearse and perform easier.
