As students leave the world of small picture books they can finish in a few minutes and move into reading novels, we often find that many students struggle to take this leap and quit reading independently. Having books that excite, motivate and engage students to read is one of the most difficult tasks of a teacher. This becomes especially difficult for students we like to call "not there yet" kids. These are our students that struggle with reading. They feel discouraged and do not enjoy books, yet they must spend time with literature to help their reading levels increase. The books I have chosen are those that never seem to get a rest on the library bookshelf. Much of the reason for this is due to a new trend of graphic novels that engages students through pictures. The students never realize that they are reading a 200 page novel in the process. It is amazing how this helps students stick with a novel and develops habits that help them continue to be readers for life. Please help me allow all students access to these books.
