Promoting Equity: Flexible Seating in Science Class
Funded Aug 12, 2021My students are using their flexible seating during science class, where they nominate fellow classmates they agree would benefit from the seating that day. The class unanimously votes for students, knowing that different students are nominated each day, unless the class agrees as a whole that some students would benefit from using the flexible seating on consecutive days for that class period. In the space we are in this year (library) they have room to spread out and use the floor cushions on their regular seats or on the floor, and use the wobble chair and stools as well.
Students were very curious and excited when they first saw the materials. They asked a lot of questions about how we would create a system together to utilize and share the seating options, and they look forward to making those decisions as a class. I think the process of discussing who to nominate and why based on individual and perceived needs is bringing my students closer together. They have an increased awareness of how they learn best, and more acceptance and respect for each other. I do believe that this routine we established is improving their collaborative and interpersonal skills.
I would like to expand these flexible seating options to more of my students, even perhaps in their different subjects as we continue to navigate teaching through the pandemic. I am thankful for these resources, and looking forward to using them with more of my students this year and beyond. I shared what I am doing with several colleagues and they are seeking to try similar approaches with flexible seating in their classrooms to help promote equity. From the bottom of my heart, I cannot express how thankful and grateful I am to have these resources and your support. My students' success is made possible by all of you, so thank you so much!”
With gratitude,
