Children learn through play. Dramatic play helps them to develop social skills and to deal with the scary new situations they face. For example, playing with emergency vehicles helps them cope with the concept of needing them in real life.
Blocks help students develop problem-solving skills, figure out balance and work on mathematical ideas like symmetry.
Art supplies such as paint help students develop fine motor skills and express ideas. Drawing and explaining a picture is how students begin to develop the skills for writing stories.
While academics are certainly important, children naturally learn through play. Unfortunately current legislative thinking is that we must test, test, test but kids also need a chance to be kids.
